VegKC 2006-2007 Member Choice Award:
Best Mongolian Barbecue

If you're new to the Kansas City Mongolian barbecue scene, here's how it works: Grab a black/blue bowl (for vegetarians), go to the raw food bar and pile up your favorite veggies, go to the noodle area and get some rice noodles (they also have egg noodles for you non-vegans), and then go to the sauce bar to douse on your favorite sauces and spices (they have recommended recipes if you're not sure what you want). When you're done, head over to the grill area where grillers flash-fry your veggie bowls separately from those of Atkins fans. Top it with sesame seeds and enjoy! Go back as often as you like. They also have spring rolls, fried flatbread, and fresh fruit—all vegan, and cheesecake bites for vegetarians.

Just try not to visit during peak hours, when the hurried grillers frequently (but accidentally) fling meaty things into your food from the meat bowls that are grilling. $-$$

"Disregard this cozy eatery's unimpressive strip mall location, as many of KC's savvier palates regard the Orchid as one of the best places around to get spicy, homemade Thai cuisine. The amiable waitstaff is energetic and committed to making sure you get the most out of your dining experience; meanwhile, the kitchen prepares some of the area's best spring rolls and pad Thai..." $-$$

WinnerVegKC 2006-2007 Member Choice Award:
Best Vegan Pizza

Located in Kansas City near 75th and Wornall and also in Lees Summit in Rollins Meadow at Douglas Square, Waldo Pizza is immensely popular due to having really awesome pizza (frequently considered "the best in the midwest"). Like Minsky's they offer a crazy variety of veggies. BEST OF ALL, THEY NOW HAVE VEGAN MOZZARELLA!! This makes Waldo Pizza Kansas City's first pizza shop to offer 100 percent vegan pizza—including the cheese!

Waldo pizza has always had soy cheese available on their menu—unfortunately, the "soy cheese" has casein in it and isn't vegan. Recently, they've added Follow Your Heart's Vegan Gourmet soy cheese, and it's absolutely amazing! The regular, non-vegan soy cheese is still available (and listed on the menu), so to get the good stuff be sure to ask for the "vegan mozzarella."

Hand-tossed and thin crusts are vegan, gluten-free crust available in both vegan and non-vegan options. Marinara sauce is vegan. At the salad bar, the Italian and French dressing is vegan. Full bar available. Seriously the best pizza in KC. $-$$$

The olive spread is really yummy on either. Wi-fi available for $1 an hour ($2 minimum), arcade games also available. Quite possibly the most veg-friendly coffeeshop in KC, so please support them! $

National Restaurant Chains & Fast Food

Need a quick meal? Although we encourage you to support local restaurants whenever possible, here's a list of national chains (some owned by local business owners) that offer some great veg options. It's important to remember that in today's consumer-driven society, we vote with our dollars. If we really want restaurants to add more healthy, veg-friendly items, we need to support those places that already do.

Burger King
(web site | yellow pages)
Many locations available.
Burger King's BK Veggie was recently reformulated to include egg whites, so they're no longer vegan. But considering that this is a huge international chain, any effort to create veggie burgers is pretty noteworthy—it's more than McD's can claim. So it's a respectable offering on their part. Fries are partially hydrogenated but lard-free. $

Pizza
(yellow pages)
Many locations available.

You can eat vegan at just about any pizza shop and still really enjoy it. Here's what we recommend: First, make sure the sauce and crust are vegan (if this is important to you). Second, and most importantly, substitute the cheese for extra sauce. If the sauce and crust are tasty enough, you won't miss the cheese at all (as proven by some of our shocked non-vegan friends). The extra sauce will keep it from being too dry.

If you're vegan, the following are considered relatively safe choices but please do your own research as recipes can change without notice. Click the linked pizza shop names to visit their nutrition page.

  • Chuck E. Cheese – All crusts and pizza sauce are vegan.
  • Domino's Pizza – Thin crust and pizza sauce are vegan.
  • Giovanni's Pizza – All crusts and pizza sauce are vegan.
  • Godfather's pizza – A ll crusts, pizza sauce, and taco sauce are vegan.
  • Little Caesar's – A ll crusts, pizza sauce, crazy sauce, and crazy bread (minus parmesan) are vegan.
  • Mazzio's Pizza – Thin crust, original crust, and pizza sauce are vegan.
  • Minsky's – T hin crust, hand-tossed crust, and pizza sauce are vegan; see description above for more info.
  • Papa John's – Original crust and pizza sauce are vegan.
  • Pizza Hut – No vegan options (all crusts have milk-derived ingredients).
  • Waldo Pizza – Hand-tossed crust, thin crust, marinara pizza sauce, and "vegan mozzarella" (ask for it) are vegan; beware of regular "soy cheese," which has casein; see description above for more info.

Worth the Drive

Some places are so good that it's actually worth a drive. Here's places you can visit in Lawrence, St. Joseph, and other nearby cities that aren't Kansas City but we darn well wish they were. Know of any spectacular places that are worth the drive? !

Alldredge's Apple Man Orchard

10455 County Rd. N
Platte City, MO 64079

A great place to go apple or pumpkin picking in the fall and play with animals (wild chickens, ducks, geese, and more run around underfoot while you're picking fruit--you can feed them for a couple of quarters) or pet them if you can get their attention long enough! They also have a gift shop, go-kart rides for kids, and plenty of other fun stuff.
Casbah Market
(web site)
803 Massachusetts St.
Lawrence, KS 66044

The Casbah Market is a new ALL vegetarian grocery store specializing in affordable organic and local produce and packaged goods. Not your typical grocery store, the Casbah is decorated with highly polished natural wood, hand-blown glass lighting, and off-beat artwork. There is also the Jamaican-inspired Nice Café located inside the store that is very nearly all organic and mostly vegan. The menu features a jerk-style tofu, rice and peas, terrific salads, fresh juices, and much more. It is primarily take-out, but all the to-go containers are 100 percent compostable and made from renewable resources. The café is also available for catering.

If you're in Lawrence, be sure to drop by!

Lawrence, KS 66044

Extremely popular as a day-trip destination for KC folks, Local Burger is located in Lawrence, KS, and located just a block away from the main shopping strip. Local Burger has been making headlines across the country for having outstanding local, organic dishes (including meats). But it's also a vegan's paradise!

The vegan options are unlimited and incredibly tasty (the Caesar salad, which uses tofu strips instead of chicken, for example, is absolutely incredible). They even offer vegan smoothies (including chocolate and vanilla) that are mind blowing! Veg dishes are all dairy & egg free (including the veggie burger) and they even offer casein-free vegan cheese--so you can get a vegan cheeseburger! They also offer some tasty dishes that have been gaining a cult following (like the raw rainbow slaw and progressive potatoes), as well as some generally awesome dishes (tofu fillet sandwich, steamed brown rice with veggies & tamari, daily veg soup, and much more).
